Located in the Varese region, Malpensa airport features two parallel runways, two passenger terminals (Terminal 2 is dedicated to EasyJet), connected by a free shuttle bus service that runs every seven minutes, 24 hours a day, and a cargo terminal. It is the world's 29th busiest airport, handling around 18 million passengers every year.

It was open in 1909 as an industrial airport near the Ticino river. The first concrete runway was laid when the airport was under Nazi control, during the Second World War, and it officially started as a commercial airport in 1948. It has been extensively enlarged and renovated throughout the years.

• Parking: There are five car parks located near the terminal building. P1 is the long-term car park, it has over 1200 uncovered parking places at Terminal 1, only a 4-minute walk away; minimum stay is 7 days. P2 is the Executive Car Park, and has 2700 covered parking places linked directly to the check-in area - inside is the Top Car area, with 130 large spots for luxury cars, and the Genius area with 500 spaces on floor -4 meant for long-term stays. P3 is the express car park, covered, it offers 1600 spaces adjacent to Terminal 1. P4 is another long-term car park where rates are cheaper the longer you stay; it has 1200 uncovered parking spaces. Finally, P5 is the Easy car park, inside Terminal 2, with 24-hour connection to Terminal 1 thanks to the free shuttle, featuring 3000 uncovered parking spaces. • Trains: Malpensa Express trains travel both ways every 7 minutes (30 minutes from 22:45 to 05:15) connecting Terminal 1 of the airport with Piazza Cadorna station in Milan. The journey takes around 40 minutes. Cadorna station is located in the heart of Milan near monumental and artistic sites and links to the red and green lines of the central Milan Subway. Linate International Airport, located 7 kilometres east of Milan, handles mainly domestic flights but also daily flights to European capitals such as Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid and Frankfurt. Milan city centre can be reached by bus or car from Linate.

Linate is Milan's secondary airport, behind Malpensa, and the closest to the city centre. It receives around 10 million passengers every year. Featuring 24 gates, it offers a wide range of domestic and medium range international flights, mainly to other European cities.

Built in the 1930s, it was completely rebuilt in the 1950s and then again in the 1980s. It is officially named Enrico Forlanini airport, after the engineer and inventor who worked in helicopters and aircrafts.

International airport in Bergamo for low-cost airlines, Orio al Serio Airport is Bergamo's airport, located only 5 kilometres from Bergamo and 45 kilometres north-east of Milan. The airport operates both international and domestic flights. Trains and bus shuttles run regularly to the centre of Bergamo and Milan, and both taxis and car rentals are available at arrivals.

Also known as Il Caravaggio International Airport, this is the third busiest airport in Italy, serving around 10 million passengers every year. Many low-cost airlines operate at Orio al Serio, offering flights mainly to other European cities as well as some places in northern Africa. Built in the 1930s as a military airport, it has been renovated and extended throughout the years.

It takes around 10 minutes to drive from the centre of Bergamo, and 50 minutes from Milan centre to Orio al Serio airport. Take the A4 from Milan and exit at Bergamo on the SS671 intercity for the most direct route.

Regional airport in the Swiss city of Lugano. If you are planning on working your way south through the Italian Lakes, then flying into Lugano airport in Switzerland, which sits at the tip of Lake Lugano, is not a bad option though you will need to change in Zurich or Geneva. There is an airport shuttle into Lugano, based around arrival times, as well as a taxi rank and offices of major car rental companies.

Located just 4 kilometres from the city of Lugano, 30 kilometres from Lake Como and approximately 70 kilometres north of Milan, this is a small airport handling around 200,000 passengers per year. There is only one passenger terminal building offering flights to Geneva and Zurich, as well as seasonal flights to Olbia, Cagliari and Elba Island.

The terminal building includes rent-a-car, airline ticket and check-in desks, and there is a departure lounge with a duty-free shop, kiosk, snack bar and restaurant. Boarding aircrafts is done on foot. Lugano Airport is one of the few airports in the world offering a check-in service up to 20 minutes prior to departure.

• Parking: There is a car park just 100m from the terminal's entrance, including long-term parking spaces and short-term rates for up to 90 minutes.

• Buses: There is a shuttle bus service from Lugano city centre running between 08:00 and 18:30.
• Trains: You can easily reach Lugano Airport by train, thanks to the Lugano-Ponte Tresa Train Service (FLP) starting from directly opposite the main Railway Station in Lugano. From the stop at Agno you can reach the airport within a 10-minute walk. The service is available every day.
• Airlines: Only Swiss, Etihad Regional and Silver Air airlines operate from Lugano airport.

It takes around 15 minutes to drive from the centre of Lugano, and around 40 minutes from Milan to Lugano airport. If you are driving from Milan, take the A2 Milan-Basel motorway and exit 'Lugano Nord' following then the road to Ponte Tresa-Agno.

Turin airport, Aéroport Sandro-Pertini de Turin Caselle, is about 100km from the French border and can be used to access the ski resorts in France as well as Milan or Verona in Italy.

Getting to Milan will take around 2 hours drive and Verona 3 hours.

Milan's city centre can be reached easily from Malpensa airport by train, bus or car. Out of peak hours, the journey by car between airport and city centre takes on average 45 to 50 mins. The airport has direct access to the A8, E26 and a new road is planned linking the A4 Milan-Turin highway to Milan's Western Ring Road.
